Life "Under The Sun"

Friday, June 26, 2009 ·

What is the meaning of life? What is it that people struggle to obtain? Is it wealth? Pleasure? Fame? Many of us are deluded into thinking that these things are an end to themselves. If we just had a little more, then we would be satisfied.

Yesterday, two people who had all of these things met their final end. Yesterday, both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson had all that this world had to offer. Despite having everything that we think would make us happy, both of these individuals were tortured souls, even in life. Today, all that they had is gone from their grasp, of no profit to them whatsoever.

King Solomon also had all that the world could offer, and that which he didn't have, he pursued with all diligence. What was his conclusion?

"I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind." (Ecclesiastes 1:14)

Life "under the sun" refers to the natural life, life without God. The conclusion is that all is vanity and a striving after wind. The root word for "vanity" suggests a vapor. Death is a great equalizer, and no amount of money or education will stave it off for a moment.

Life under the SON, however, takes on a different meaning.

"Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."" (John 4:13-14)

"Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)

God is the Creator and Sustainer of life, and all searches for the meaning of life must begin with Him. The Christian life is certainly not about "Your Best Life Now". It may be hard. You will have a cross to carry. But life "under the sun", being wed to this goddess of this world, is vanity, no matter what temporary treasures she may contain in her dowry.
